Simplicity in Play

Play doesn't have to be complicated, sometimes the most effective learning takes place in the simplest of play set ups.

Taking a moment to pause and observe play the magic of learning through play comes to life...

Water Play

This activity was set up in our early morning session Little Pumpkins Playtime, as February is the month of love, we used pink and red resources to sit alongside our theme.

Within this play was a little one who stayed engaged with the simple repetition of pouring water into a pot tipping it out and then starting again

So what learning is happening here ?

  • Fine Motor Skills - Picking up small tools and keeping the pot stable whilst pouring.

  • Hand Eye Coordination - scooping, moving and pouring the water into the pot.

  • Developing Mathematical Concepts - Filling and emptying

  • Problem Solving - What to do when the pot is full

As this little one was also in as group activity even more social learning took place, watching others and incorporation new ideas into their play. We can then look at the self care learning that also took place when the little one finished, drying their hands and moving on to new play.

So as you can see there is a huge amount of learning taking place here and even more could happen with the introduction of scaffolding and supporting play, but this needs to happen without taking over and disrupting the amazing learning that is taking place.

Even something as simple as you as the adult playing alongside and narrating your play, your little one may introduce this into their own agenda. An example would be counting the number of scoops you are pouring into the pot.
